A Message from the Principal
Dear Leigh Stationers’ Academy Community,
It is a privilege to share my first Principal’s message and to have joined such a warm, ambitious and proud school community. I have been made to feel very welcome by students, staff and families, and I look forward to working with you all.
This week I have had the opportunity to lead our College assemblies with our Deputy Principal, Ms Dooley, where we encouraged students to reflect on the importance of fresh starts, renewal and high expectations as we begin a new term. Drawing on themes seen in recent religious festivals such as Easter, Ramadan and Passover, as well as NASA’s recent space exploration to the moon, we spoke about how reflection, discipline and hope is so important to human endeavour, and how each of our students can embody our academy values of leadership, scholarship and achievement in their daily lives.
It has also been a successful first week across the Academy. Our Year 12 students have taken part in mentoring sessions supported by The Stationers’ Company, meeting professionals from journalism, media and print. These will now continue as one-to-one mentoring relationships, supporting students with university and apprenticeship applications, interviews and future pathways.
We were also pleased to see a highly successful Year 10 Parents’ Evening, with strong attendance and productive conversations about student progress. Thank you for your continued support in working together to secure the best outcomes for our students.
Beyond the classroom, students continue to benefit from enriching experiences. Over the Easter break, students enjoyed a fantastic sports tour to Malaga, achieving excellent results in both football and netball alongside cultural and team-building activities. Over the same period, students also took part in a successful ski trip, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and enthusiasm in a different environment.
As we move forward, we remain focused on the importance of consistency, effort and high expectations. Every day and every lesson matters, and I look forward to all we will achieve together this term.
Thank you for your continued support.
Best wishes,
Mr Ben Russell | Principal, Leigh Stationers’ Academy
Year 12 Mentoring Opportunity with the Stationers’ Company
Year 12 students recently took part in a valuable mentoring programme supported by The Stationers’ Company, meeting professionals from a range of careers in journalism, media, and print. Across two events, students engaged in insightful discussions about mentors’ career journeys and were able to ask questions and seek guidance about their own future pathways.
Following these sessions, students will have the opportunity to continue these relationships through ongoing one-to-one mentoring meetings. This continued support will help them with university and apprenticeship applications, interview preparation, and important future decision-making. Mentors were highly impressed by the students, praising them as articulate, enthusiastic, and dynamic. We look forward to seeing these mentoring relationships develop further over the coming months.
Strong Attendance at Year 10 Parents’ Evening
On Wednesday, 15 April 2026, Leigh Stationers’ Academy successfully hosted its Year 10 Parents’ Evening, with more than 90% of parents and carers attending the event. In total, over 1,300 appointments were conducted across the evening, providing families with an important opportunity to meet with teachers, discuss progress and reflect on the next steps in pupils’ learning.
Mrs Dooley, Deputy Principal said: “It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout from our Year 10 parents and carers. Evenings like this play a vital role in ensuring we are working together to support our young people, particularly as they progress through their GCSE studies. It was great to witness so many positive and purposeful conversations, and we are very grateful for the ongoing support of our families and staff in helping every pupil succeed.”
The final Parents’ Evening of the academic year is our Year 7 Parents’ Evening, which takes place on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. Bookings go live on Friday, 26 June 2026. Further information about booking appointments will be shared in future latest news page updates.
Residential Ski Trip
The mountains were calling, and our students certainly answered! This April, a group of 39 intrepid students swapped their school shoes for ski boots and headed to the stunning resort of Val Cenis, France. From the moment we landed and made our way through the mountains, it was clear this would be a trip to remember—starting with an impromptu snowball fight as soon as the bags were dropped!
The week was defined by resilience and skill. Our beginner groups showed remarkable tenacity, quickly mastering the basics before confidently conquering red runs. The intermediates excelled at parallel skiing, while our advanced group flew down black runs and tackled complex slalom courses with professional flair.
A huge congratulations to Archie G, who earned a gold medal for completing the slalom in a blistering sub-30-second time!
The fun didn’t stop when the lifts closed. The evenings were packed with laughter and friendly competition, particularly during our two nights at the bowling alley:
- Bowling Night One: Winners included Darcie R, Elliot C, James B, Finley S, Killan C, and Harry B. Harry was the first “King of the Alley” with a 114.
- Bowling Night Two: The competition heated up! Game winners were James B, Ben W, Milo N, and Harry B. However, the ultimate crown went to Killian C, who became the “King of the Bowling Alley” on night two with an impressive score of 121.
- Karaoke Superstars: Florence wowed us with her solos, and the Year 12 boys provided a heart-warming rendition of Happy Birthday for James. However, the undisputed highlight of the night was the finale: every single person in the group joined in for a legendary, roof-raising performance of Wonderwall.
- Mountain Birthdays: We also celebrated Ben, James M and Frankie’s birthdays with pub quizzes, cake, and plenty of Alpine cheer.
As the trip concluded with hot chocolates, diplomas, and the awarding of badges, the staff team reflected on what a pleasure the group had been. Reflecting on the success of the trip, Mr. Smith, Vice Principal, shared: “It has been an absolute pleasure to take your children away and watch them grow and develop into more confident skiers. Seeing their progress and character on the slopes has truly been one of the highlights of my career—I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat! They were a credit to LSA, returning with memories and skills that will last a lifetime.”
Sports Tour to Malaga – A Memorable Experience for Year Group
Last week, 68 students took part in an exciting sports tour to Malaga, where they benefited from high-quality training sessions delivered by expert professional coaches. The teams achieved excellent results across the tournament, with the boys finishing as runners-up and third place in football, and the girls becoming champions in netball.
Alongside the competitive fixtures, students enjoyed a fantastic balance of sport and culture, including time at the beach, rounders in the sunshine, and a final shopping trip before returning home. The tour was a great success, with students representing the school with pride, teamwork, and enthusiasm, while also showing clear sporting development throughout the week.

With our work experience week (6–10 July 2026) fast approaching, we would like to ensure every student has a confirmed placement.
If your child is still searching, we recommend a proactive approach. While digital applications are a good starting point, visiting local businesses in person—ideally with a parent or carer for support—often leaves the strongest impression. Please encourage them to remain persistent; a follow-up phone call or a polite visit can often be the deciding factor in securing an opportunity. You can also use the Unifrog Apprenticeships tool to identify local employers who are already experienced in hosting students.
Once a placement is verbally confirmed, it must be officially organised through the Unifrog system. Students should log into Unifrog, select ‘Add a new placement’ under the Placements tool, and complete the Student Initial Form. A placement is only considered complete once the employer and parent have both finished their respective digital sections. We recommend that students follow up with their employer to ensure these forms have been received—it is often worth reminding them to check their spam or junk folders for the Unifrog notification.

Reminder: Year 8 Vaccinations: Important Information for Parents and Carers
