Dear SCWA Community,
This week at Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy has been filled with activities and achievements that reflect our commitment to scholarship, fellowship, and leadership. Nearly 500 of our students were rewarded for their exemplary behaviour with trips to Thorpe Park and a virtual tour of Egypt’s pyramids, celebrating their consistent dedication to our academy’s standards. Our Year 12 students have enriched their studies with practical learning experiences at London Zoo and through field studies focused on urban regeneration and coastal geography, providing them with invaluable insights that complement their classroom studies.
In the sporting arena, our students showed remarkable team spirit at the Greenwich School Athletic Championships. Despite challenging weather, our athletes achieved notable successes, with stand-out performances and record-breaking feats.
As we approach the final week of module six, we invite all parents and carers to attend a live webinar on Monday, 15 July 2024, at 18:00. This session will provide information on the end-of-module arrangements and our plans for the next academic year. For those unable to attend live, the webinar will be recorded and made available on YouTube for later viewing.
We look forward to seeing you virtually on Monday.
Joseph Sparks | Principal, Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy

SCWA Rewards Nearly 500 Students for Exemplary Conduct
On Tuesday, 9 July 2024, Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy recognised the hard work and exemplary behaviour of nearly 500 students by organising two reward trips. Over 400 students enjoyed a fun-filled day at Thorpe Park, engaging in various rides and attractions, while more than 50 students, including nine from Dean School, explored the pyramids of Egypt through a virtual reality experience at a Westfield VR facility.
Mr Farr, Head of College, highlighted the significance of these reward trips, stating, “Recognising and rewarding so many pupils who consistently do the right thing in every lesson, every day, is crucial. The fact that so many of our pupils were invited to these outings demonstrates the strength of behaviour at SCWA.”
Year 12 Biology Students Explore Conservation at London Zoo
On Thursday, 4 July 2024, Year 12 Biology students from SCWA enjoyed a trip to London Zoo. The visit offered them a practical insight into their A-level studies on biodiversity and in situ conservation, showcasing these concepts in real-world settings.
The students engaged in several interactive experiences throughout the day. One of the highlights was an up-close session with the lemurs, which allowed students to observe these creatures in a semi-natural habitat.
The visit culminated at Penguin Beach, where the students observed a feeding session. This furthered their understanding of animal diets and the roles different species play in their ecosystems. These encounters reinforced their classroom learning and deepened their appreciation for wildlife conservation efforts.
Mr Flower, Head of College, expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thank you to Ms Hurley, Ms Malik, and Mr Elboury for accompanying the students and making this experience possible. The trip was not only educational but also inspirational, sparking a greater interest among the students in the field of conservation biology.”
Year 12 Geography Students Explore Urban and Coastal Environments
Last week, our A-level Geography students took part in two field trips, enhancing their studies with practical insights into urban regeneration and coastal geography. These trips are integral to their coursework, forming 20% of their assessment through independent fieldwork investigations.
The first excursion led the students to Stratford, London, where they explored the ongoing effects of the 2012 Olympics. At the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, students witnessed the transformation of an industrial area into a sustainable urban community, complete with residential spaces and commercial hubs. They examined the socio-economic impacts and the strategies behind the urban regeneration, collecting primary data through surveys and visual documentation to support their research projects.
The following day’s trip to the Kent coast included visits to Whitstable and Reculver, focusing on coastal processes and landforms. In Whitstable, the students conducted measurements of beach profiles to understand the effects of wave energy on sediment distribution and coastal management. Reculver provided a contrasting study with its eroding cliffs and historical features, where students assessed erosion rates and geological characteristics.
Mr Jusik, Director of Individuals & Societies, commented, “The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by our students throughout these trips were commendable. Their active participation and detailed observations are set to enhance their academic profiles and deepen their understanding of geographical dynamics.”

Year 9 Student Ellis Ranks 8th at World Karting Finals
Ellis, Year 9, finished eighth at the World Karting Finals, making him the top junior driver from the UK and the highest finisher from Brentwood. After strong initial heats, a slower kart in the pre-final affected his performance, dropping him from fifth to tenth place. Despite these challenges, Ellis completed the competition without any penalties, marking a successful debut in his first international race. This achievement highlights his potential in the sport and stands as a significant accomplishment.
Mr Sparks, Principal, said: “We are incredibly proud of Ellis’s performance. His determination and skill at such a high level of competition are truly commendable. We look forward to following Ellis’s karting career over the coming years.”
