We recognise that housing difficulties can be an incredibly stressful experience for families and young people. This guidance provides practical information about eviction, where to seek help, and what steps to take if you are at risk of becoming homeless or have already lost accommodation. If your housing situation changes, please inform the Academy so that we can provide appropriate pastoral support for your child.
Understanding eviction and your rights
In most cases, a landlord cannot legally evict you without following the correct process. This usually includes:
- Providing written notice that meets legal requirements.
- Allowing a minimum notice period, depending on tenancy type.
- Obtaining a court order and, where necessary, bailiff involvement before removal from the property.
An eviction is generally not legal if:
- You have only received a verbal request to leave.
- Locks are changed without a court process.
- You are forced out without notice or legal paperwork.
If you are unsure about your situation, seek advice immediately from your local council or a housing charity.
If you are at risk of losing your home
Acting early can increase the support available to you:
- Contact your local council’s Housing Options or Homelessness Team as soon as possible.
- Speak with your landlord or housing provider to understand timelines and options.
- Gather important documents such as tenancy agreements, notices, identification and benefit information.
- Inform the Academy if housing instability may affect your child’s attendance or wellbeing.
If you have been evicted or become homeless
If you are already without safe accommodation:
- Contact your local council immediately and request a homelessness assessment.
- Families with dependent children may be entitled to emergency or temporary accommodation.
- If you feel unsafe or have nowhere to stay that night, inform the council that you require urgent assistance.
You can also seek advice from national organisations that offer free housing guidance.
Where to seek support
The following services can provide advice and practical help:
- Your local council Housing or Homelessness Service.
- Shelter (free housing advice and legal guidance).
- Citizens Advice.
- GP or wellbeing services if stress or anxiety is affecting your health.
If you are in immediate danger or feel at risk, contact emergency services.
