KS3: MYP French

Intent

We have designed our curriculum using the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum and it is delivered under the IB MYP framework. The Key Stage 2 National Curriculum is used to establish a starting point to build upon previous knowledge, helping students transition between the Key Stages.

The MFL Department at Leigh Stationers’ Academy inspires students to develop their Spanish or French languages’ skills and to develop a shared passion for other cultures.

Our curriculum is knowledge based and arranged on the four main skills of a language: speaking, writing, reading and listening. Students will receive the tools to be able to communicate and use language effectively, understanding grammatical structures and different audiences.

From Year 7 up to Year 13, students will learn transferable skills, such as how to infer knowledge from reading texts, how to make educated assumptions; how to write and speak using formal and informal styles; how to skim through reading texts, etc. These skills will be learnt and applied in Modern Foreign Languages but also transferred and applied to other subjects, becoming transferable skills.

Students will cover a broad range of topics that are relevant and relatable to them, such as physical and character descriptions; free time activities; school life; future plans and career ambitions; environmental and social issues; Spanish and French literature and filmography, etc. These topics are distributed in the MFL curriculum map and divided in 3 levels of challenge: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

We live in a globalised society and our students will learn how valuable it is to learn a different language and understand other cultures, leading them to become open-minded citizens and increasing their cultural capital.

In addition to this, grammar is the core of the MFL curriculum and teachers are expected to introduce, revise, recall and recover grammar points through all year groups, using Assessment for Learning strategies to inform their teaching and students’ needs.

All our students need to be exposed to the curriculum and MFL teachers will need to apply and deliver consistently the following aspects:

  • Assessment (Summative and formative)
  • Retrieval practice
  • Clear explanations and introduction to new learning
  • Use dual coding to help students link words, images and meaning
  • Modelling
  • Differentiation and scaffolding
  • Independent practice after modelling completed by teachers
  • Progress tracking of students
  • Students are expected to take pride in the presentation of their books, engage with the weekly piece of homework and stretch their learning skills during lessons. Every teacher will set homework regularly and students are expected to complete it on time.

To measure the impact of the curriculum, students’ performance, and progress. Students will be assessed formally twice a year in each language skill: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

In addition to this, students will have the opportunity to practise skill-based exam style questioning 2 or 3 times per module.

Teachers will gather this information, analysing gaps in learning and providing further feedback to students, helping them to improve their performance.

MFL Teachers will deliver concepts, adapting them to the students, supporting them to reach their full potential.
